Adrian gasped in air as the Dementor was shoved back by the potronus that Elena casted. He quickly looked over to his wand but could barely make it out as his vision became blurred. Before he could even attempt to reach for it once more, his vision turned to blackness.
The dementor recognized Adrian's unconscious state and quickly rushed back to him. Slowly the memories began seeping from Adrian's soul and in that process a memory flashed through Adrian's mind...
"It is forbidden to teach a student this spell," Professor Finnigan, the Hogwarts Defense against the Dark Arts teacher, said, as he was teaching a curse, "your amazing skill for learning and your unimaginable potential as a duelist cannot be ignored. So, watch carefully. Do you see the owl perched on the tree?" He asked pointing out to a brownish gray owl that was staring down on the two of them. They were out in the middle of the forest in the middle of one spring day. "Avada Kadavra!" A stirring chill ran throughout Adrian as the tip of Finnigan's wand shot a green light. The owl didn't even have a moments notice. The dead animal dropped to the ground while Adrian stood astounded. "Teach me," he said eager to learn the devastating curse. Greed had latched onto him. With that attack in his arsenal he would be invincible. He wanted so badly to learn it, He needed to learn it.

Deeply grateful that they had learned expecto patronum towards the end of fifth year, Elena watched as her patronus chased the dementor away down the tunnel, its silver light vanishing for a moment, before racing back towards her. Elena swung her wand to point at the dementor attacking Adrian again, and her patronus changed direction to dart towards it. The silver fox leaped at it, and began herding it away, dancing back and forth in front of it and snapping at it, directing it away down the hall as it had the other dementor.
Once the dementor was far enough away from Adrian, Elena left her patronus to its task and rushed over to the professor, kneeling down and bending over him. "Adrian?" she asked urgently, not even realizing her slip in calling him by his first name. She reached out to pat his cheek repeatedly, each pat growing slightly more forceful as she tried to rouse him from unconsciousness. "Adrian, wake up!" she demanded, brow furrowed in worry.

Adrian slowly opened his eyes as he reached his hand up to his head. All he could see was a blur of pinkness and he closed his eyes again assuming he was still in some sort of dream. His hand bumped into Elena's and he pressed against it, as it was still on his cheek. "Elena!" he exclaimed opening his eyes instantly. Relief filled him as he realized she was the pink blur he saw. "Thank goodness you're alright," he said not realizing that he was pressing on her hand. "Bloody hell do I feel weak. Damn sneaky devils."
"Where'd they go?" he muttered straining to regain full consciousness.

Elena breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Adrian's eyes open and heard him say her name. She was so glad to see him wake that she didn't even notice that he was pressing her hand to his face. "Gone," she said, nodding in the direction that her patronus had chased them. As she did so, her patronus came trotting back into view. "Thanks," Elena said to it. The fox twitched its tail in acknowledgment, then dissolved into mist before disappearing altogether.
Turning back to Adrian, she explained, "I used the patronus charm. Took a couple tries, but it worked. What are dementors doing in here?" She shook her head. "Stupid question, I know - we don't even know where 'here' is." She realized when she reflexively tried to gesture with it while speaking that her hand was still in Adrian's grasp. She paused, then said, "Um, I think I might need that." She nodded at her trapped hand.

"Huh?" Adrian said right before realizing he was holding down Elena's hand. "How did.. oh nevermind," he said releasing it. He slowly sat up and looked around, "Nice work with the patronus. Sorry about not figuring out that we had some company sooner," he said blinking repeatedly in an attempt to sharpen his sight. "Dementors always show up when you least expect it," he added pushing himself up to his feet.
His balance seemed a bit wobbly and he set his hand on Elena's shoulder for a bit of support. "I think we'll just wait for a few seconds before we continue. Sorry, just need to regain my balance," he said with a bit of a laugh. "That or you can go ahead of me but I don't think I'd want you to have all the fun."

Elena shrugged dismissively and said, "Not your fault. I didn't realize they were here either. The important thing is that we escaped, souls intact. And, of course, that I came out looking like the hero here." She grinned to let him know she was only kidding.
Without even thinking about it, Elena slipped an arm around Adrian's waist to steady him, and looked up at him in concern. "Are you sure you're alright? Watch my finger." she asked, reaching up to pass a finger back and forth in front of his eyes. "I don't really know what I'm doing, but I know you're supposed to do this when checking to see if someone has a concussion. Something about reaction time, I guess."

Adrian felt Elena's arm around his waist but decided not to make anything of it, she was just helping him regain his balance."It was sucking at my soul, not decking me in the face." Adrian said with a laugh as he pulled down Elena's hand. "Yeah, you actually were the hero. Saved my neck," he added. Normally he would be irritated by the fact that someone else saved him. For some reason, however, he was glad that Elena had been there to assist and didn't feel any emotions of discontent. "I wonder if there are more down the pathway. I guess we'll just have to be extra careful."

Elena laughed a little and said, "Well, as long as you're sure about the concussion." She made a show of thinking, to give him a few more minutes to recover. "Perhaps I should get a spandex superhero outfit.. Super Elena!"
She paused then, frowning, and raised a hand to lay a finger across Adrian's lips to indicate he should be silent. Elena listened intently - there it was again. The faint, sibilant sound of people speaking in the distance, their voices ricocheting off the cave walls toward Adrian and Elena. "Do you hear that?" Elena whispered. "Voices - there's somebody in here, other than dementors."

Adrian gave a smirk at Elena's comment, "That would be quite the sight." Adrian was about to say more but Elena hushed him with her finger. As she mention the voices, Adrian himself could barely make out the distant sound of people conversing between themselves. He quickly looked down to realize that he had forgotten to pick up his wand. Slowly he knelt down and reached for it. Once it was in his hand he quickly rose back up to his feet.
"Get on that side," he whispered as he pointed towards the wall that she was nearest. He walked towards the wall that he was nearest. "Follow my lead," he said as he began walking down the tunnel, towards the voices. He made sure to place each step carefully, as to not make any noise.

Elena nodded, moving up against the wall, and began to walk slowly, and as lightly as she could manage, wand held firmly in hand. As they drew closer, the voices became louder and more clear - it sounded as though they were arguing, almost.
"We need someone inside, and soon. The registry would be invaluable to our cause," a rasping, gravelly voice said.
"But my Lord, Christopher doesn't believe the boy to be trustworthy yet - he has only just begun to learn of our ways," another, somehow slimy-sounding voice interjected.
"Not him, then, but someone!"
"And how are we to find another that qualifies for entry into the school, my Lord?"

What could they be talking about? Adrian wondered as they drew closer. Could they possibly be plotting something against the school? Adrian held up his hand signaling Elena to stop. Just ahead there was an old wooden door about five feet infront of Elena, on the wall she was walking along. "We'll wait here for a bit," Adrian whispered to her, "we'll find out what they're talking about before we decide to do anything."

Elena nodded, sidling up to the door and then stopping just beside the handle, waiting and listening.
"I do not care! An animagus, perhaps, would do, if they could get far enough in undetected. A cat would not be an unusual sight in the Headmistress's office, if my sources are true. Just get me that mage registry!" the rasping voice demanded.
"Of course, my Lord. I shall put out a call for any animagi among our fellows to come forth."
"Do so, Hroth." There was a rustling, then the bang-and-clatter of something being thrown at the wall. "Hroth! They still defy me! Why do they still not speak to me?"
"In time, my Lord, the snakes will remember you, I am sure."
"It is my legacy! They must hear me and do my bidding! This one is simply useless!" There was a brief snapping sound, and then the voice continued, "Get it out of my sight."
"Yes, of course." There was a rasp of something scraping against the floor, and then footsteps drew closer to the door, causing Elena to shoot Adrian a panicked look. "What should we do?" she mouthed silently to him.

Adrian looked around quickly for any place to hide but there was no such luck. This isn't going to go well, he thought to himself as his eyes connected with Elena's. "I don't think we have a choice, light them up." He whispered back to her. "If we catch them off guard we may be able to capture them."
He quickly drew up his wand and stood straight up and directly on the opposite side of the door. He intended to distract them in hopes of giving Elena the perfect oppurtunity to catch them off guard.

Elena looked briefly distressed at the thought of having to use her power against actual living people, but she quickly hardened her expression and nodded. It was necessary, and from the brief snatches of conversation they'd heard, it was obvious the people beyond the door were plotting something against the school. She summoned her power to the surface and held it there, simmering just underneath her skin, while she waited.
The door opened, and a hooded figure with a limp, dead snake in one hand started to step out, before spotting them. The figure dropped the snake and reached into its cloak for a wand, but Elena threw a hand out in his direction, and a ball of fire exploded outwards at the hooded figure. There was an enraged shriek as the figure's cloak was engulfed in flames, and the rasping voice from further in the room shouted, "Avada kedavra!" A beam of green light streaked past them, into the hallway, just barely missing them all. Elena gasped, jumping back a step. Shit, these guys were serious!

"Expelliarmus!" Adrian shouted with a flick of his wand. The man engulfed in flames was hurled back into the room in which he came from. "Let's get them.." He was cut off in the midst of his sentence as another geen light shot out of the room and straight for him. With a quick swing of his wand he deflected it. His hand however throbbed from the impact. The killing curse that was fired at him had such power that it was quite difficult just to block it. This guy is powerful, he thought to himself as he dodged out of the way of another casted spell and ran over to Elena.

Elena pressed herself flat to the wall next to the doorframe, and only twisted around to peer inside the door briefly as she threw in another ball of fire - this one the other figure was ready for, and deflected easily. Someone, which one Elena wasn't sure, cast an aguamentia charm, and water doused the flames engulfing the first, hooded person.
Elena reached around the door to aim a stunning spell at the second person, just as a beam of red light shot out the door and scored across her lower arm, opening up a long but shallow cut there. She gritted her teeth against the pain, and withdrew, wracking her brain for spells. The person in there was quick to deflect whatever they sent at him.
"Hroth!" the rasping voice ordered, "Where are the blasted dementors? Summon them!"
"Shit," Elena muttered. With dementors to deal with as well.. "I hate to admit this when we're having so much fun," she said to Adrian, "but I think we need to get out of here."

Adrian looked down at Elena as she suggested to leave. Retreat was not one of his favorite things to do but he had to admit that he had put Elena in enough danger as it was. Dementors would only make the situation exponentially tougher. "That's a reasonable call," said looking over his shoulder to make sure the path back to the entrance was still clear. "You go on ahead, I'll make sure they don't try to follow." He quickly motioned for Elena to switch spots with him so that he was now closest to the door. "Go now," he said to her as he switched his wand to his ungloved hand.

"Are you kidding me?" Elena hissed, grabbing Adrian's arm. "I'm not leaving you here alone!" She heard two sets of footsteps quickly drawing near the door, and quickly threw another burst of her power out, creating a wall of flame in the doorway. "Hurry," she gritted out, glaring at the door in concentration. "I can only hold it so long without anything to feed the fire with. Can you Apparate us out of here?" She prayed there weren't any anti-Apparition charms set up on the cave - if there were, they would have a mad dash to the teleportation site ahead of them.
A beam of blue light hit the wall of flame, which slowly began to die down under the onslaught, ice coating the doorframe in its wake.

"I suppose that is what we must do," Adrian said a bit relunctantly. Deep down he wanted to get a closer look at their faces. Perhaps fighting them head on was on his mind but it seemed that they had the upper hand since they were situated in the room. If he had caught them out in the hallway he would of had the upper hand. Though, he might of been underestimating them.
"Hold on tight," Adrian said to Elena as he closed his eyes and concentrated on their distination within his mind. They were suddenly sucked into some type of wormhole, or what seemed like a wormhole; a very constricted wormhole. When he opened his eyes they were standing in front of the rotted tree, just outside the barrier spell.
"That was dissapointing," Adrian said a bit irritated by their retreat. "We'll have to contact the Ministry right away so they can get there before the two of them conceal or destroy everything within that place."

Elena nodded silently, keeping her mouth shut while she fought off the brief wave of nausea that Apparition brought on. She recovered momentarily, then said, "We'd better keep moving. They probably know about the portal, and might try to follow us through it."
She began walking back the way she thought they'd come, stepping quickly. The retreat was rankling at her, too - she was normally the impulsive one, rushing into things without any thought for the danger it may put her in. But this, they were not prepared for. She had no doubt that the people who had been in that cave were summoning reinforcements, those "fellows" they had mentioned - not to mention the dementors.
"Is there a place in the school where we could Floo-Call the Ministry?" Elena asked. As far as she knew, the dormitory fires were locked against Flooing, but perhaps the professors' offices weren't.
